Next.js Stripe boilerplate: subscriptions, Checkout, and webhooks

Last updated · Wlad K.

NextBento uses Stripe for subscription billing. This page is the integration overview. Exact env vars and webhook steps live in the docs.

Quick Answer

Stripe is wired for subscription SaaS billing: Checkout, Customer Portal, and webhooks. If you only need one-time payments and no subscription lifecycle, this kit is the wrong billing shape.

What Stripe Provides

Stripe powers configurable subscription plans, monthly and annual billing, optional trials, and the Stripe Customer Portal. NextBento creates Checkout sessions for new subscriptions and handles webhooks for checkout completion, subscription updates, and cancellations. The kit buyer (NextBento itself) is a one-time $59 purchase; the boilerplate you ship is built for recurring billing.

Setup

Create Stripe products and prices, add your secret key and webhook secret to env, and run the Stripe CLI to forward webhooks in development. Full steps are in the Stripe setup and billing docs.

Checkout Flow

Users click upgrade, get redirected to Stripe Checkout, and return to your app on success. The webhook handler updates the database and can send confirmation emails.

Webhooks

NextBento listens for checkout.session.completed, customer.subscription.updated, and customer.subscription.deleted. The webhook endpoint verifies the Stripe signature before processing. Sensitive price math stays on the server.

Decision Criteria

Use this integration if your product is a subscription SaaS. Choose another kit if you need Lemon Squeezy, Polar, or Paddle as the primary processor, or if you only sell one-time licenses.

Best For / Not Ideal For

Best for recurring SaaS billing with monthly and annual plans and a customer portal. Not ideal if your business only needs one-time payments and no subscription lifecycle.

Frequently asked questions

Does NextBento support one-time payments?

The NextBento product itself is a one-time $59 purchase. The boilerplate focuses on recurring Stripe subscriptions. One-time Checkout would be extra work.

How do I test Stripe in development?

Use Stripe test mode and the Stripe CLI to forward webhooks to localhost. NextBento's Stripe setup docs cover this.

Does NextBento support annual billing?

Yes. Monthly and annual plans with a configurable annual discount (default 20%).
